If the focus of your training program is to lose weight but don't have a concern for muscle maintenance or gain you will be wasting your time and you will fail.

Your body has an amazing ability to adapt to the stresses put on it. Once your progress has slowed down significantly you need to change things up.
This can be anything including the number of sets, reps, exercises you do, etc. The key is to keep your body guessing what’s coming next.

Slow twitch fibers receive a greater involvement of work and will bring a muscle or muscle group to failure in higher rep ranges. Endurance exercise is far more likely to bring the slow twitch fibers into play.
Your fitness training programs have to bring about varying involvement from the different fibers in the different parts of each muscle.
Although there be many variations in basic types of fitness training keep in mind that all result oriented fitness training programs will utilize some combination of high rep training and low rep training.
